چکیده

There is growing evidence that some variable high-energy γ−ray sources are associated with pulsar wind nebulae. We review the current status of X-ray and radio studies of the sources most likely to be significant emitters above 100 MeV. The assumption of the γ−radiation arising from synchrotron processes puts a lower limit on the magnetic field and suggests there may be significant doppler boosting causing the asymmetries seen in the morphology of these nebulae. However, these sources are also in close proximity to molecular clouds, suggesting that variable γ−ray emission may arise from a ram pressure confined pulsar wind nebula in a dense medium.

On the Evolution of the Γ- and X-ray Luminosities of Pulsar Wind Nebulae

Pulsar wind nebulae are a prominent class of very high energy (E > 0.1 TeV) Galactic sources. Their γ-ray spectra are interpreted as due to inverse Compton scattering of ultrarelativistic electrons on the ambient photons, whereas the X-ray spectra are due to synchrotron emission. We investigate the relation between the γand-X-ray emission and the pulsars’ spin-down luminosity and characteristic...

Observations of Pulsar Wind Nebulae with the VERITAS Array of Imaging Atmo- spheric Cherenkov Telescopes

Many of the recently discovered galactic very high-energy (VHE) γ-ray sources are associated with Pulsar Wind Nebulae, which is the most populous Galactic source category at TeV energies. The extended synchrotron nebulae of these objects observed in the X-ray band are a hallmark of the relativistic winds, generated by the young, energetic neutron stars, that interact with the matter ejected by ...

High Energy Studies of Pulsar Wind Nebulae

The extended nebulae formed as pulsar winds expand into their surroundings provide information about the composition of the winds, the injection history from the host pulsar, and the material into which the nebulae are expanding. Observations from across the electromagnetic spectrum provide constraints on the evolution of the nebulae, the density and composition of the surrounding ejecta, the g...

Search for Pulsar Wind Nebula Associations of Unidentified TeV γ−Ray Sources

Many of the recently discovered galactic very high-energy γ−ray sources are associated with pulsar wind nebulae, which represent the most populous galactic source class at TeV energies. In addition, H.E.S.S. detector discovered in the galactic plane survey a representative population of unidentified TeV γ−ray sources. For a number of these sources a pulsar is an evident association, which is of...

Chandra Studies of Nonthermal Emission from Supernova Remnants and Pulsar Wind Nebulae

While supernova remnants (SNRs) have long been considered prime candidates as sources of cosmic rays, it is only recently that X-ray observations have identified several shell-type SNRs dominated by nonthermal emission, thus revealing shock-accelerated electrons with energies extending far beyond the typical thermal spectrum. Two of these SNRs have been detected as sources of VHE γ-rays. In oth...
